A Large Family Home
There was this cozy apartment with unique features for a large family, where I oversaw the conversion from design to implementation. Perched atop Sasad hill, a dream home drenched in sunlight was born.
The client came to us with the idea of converting a ground-floor office into a single storey apartment for a large family. As a plot twist, the office that took up the entire ground floor had originally been created from two adjoining apartments, leaving us with a number of things to be sorted out.
We had to select where social and personal spaces would go and then determine the optimal orientation for the living room. And, as far as the two terraces were concerned, we weren’t sure whether dining/entertainment functions should go in the one overlooking the garden or in the other. It took us a lot of conceptualizing before the massive folder containing the final plans was put together. With a budget of HUF 6 million, we had a month and a half for the project. Works were carried out by a team of longtime colleagues.
It was a gut renovation: existing walls were opened up or taken down and new ones were added, doors were moved and new mechanicals installed, in addition to a complete re-wiring, flooring and paintwork. What once was a server room became a kid’s empire dressed in pastel polka dots and stripes, a formal meeting room now functioned as the parents’ green-maroon-white bedroom, the reception was reborn as a nursery with a magic tree, a kitchenette was turned into the master bathroom, and the general office premises were repurposed as a spacious Scandinavian-style kitchen as well as a warm and earthy dining and living room. No wonder, then, that not only did the owners fall instantly in love, but so did the first prospective buyers when, several years later, the apartment was eventually put up for sale.
